Mitogens are certain substances that induce division of lymphocytes and other cells. Some of these, like the lectin glycoproteins bind to sugars on the surface of responsive cells and activate them, causing a polyclonal reaction. At low concentration, they stimulate B cells without polyclonal activation. Lipopolysaccharide is such a B cell mitogen.
